Album Review: 'Interstellar' by Frankie Rose
8/10 Audio: “Gospel/Grace” Frankie Rose’s name shouldn’t be something new for music listeners. She’s a former founding member of Brooklyn’s Vivian Girls, and occasional vocalist/instrumentalist for the post-punk band Crystal Stilts. In 2010, Frankie Rose and the Outs, her solo band, released a self-titled, full-length debut that received generally positive reviews. But while...

Earl Sweatshirt Returns (Possibly)
Just a bit ago, Odd Future front man Tyler, The Creator posted a link to a Twitter profile page and said, “Oh. Thebe Has….I Mean Earl Has A Twitter.” You can see that profile here. As you may know, Earl Sweatshirt has been in Samoa at a school/camp for troubled youth, as his mom was not to fond of his spectacular self-titled full length. Rumors have swirled around the Internet...

D'Angelo's "Left & Right" remixed by James Blake
D’Angelo’s Voodoo is somewhat of an under-appreciated commodity. Arguably the OK Computer of modern R&B, Voodoo inspired a number of artists including The Weeknd, The-Dream, and Frank Ocean. So with the announcement of D’Angelo’s return this year, James Blake took it upon himself to display his affinity for D’Angelo by remixing the tremendous track “Left...

Stream Air's 'Le Voyage Dans La Lune'
Named after and inspired by the Georges Méliès silent film, Le Voyage Dans La Lune is French outfit Air’s newest album. More along the lines of psychedelic rock and less concerned with the Frenchy sexiness of previous Air efforts (you couldn’t count the number of people that have had sex to this song), this album is something to get excited about. Stream it here (via NPR).

Album Review: 'Born To Die' by Lana Del Rey
1.5/10 Originally, I wanted to review this album in length since there are so many things one could say about Born To Die (mostly about how terrible it is) and the unbelievable hype it garnered. However, I didn’t want to waste my time (not that I’ll be doing anything productive). Instead, here’s Moe Szyslak describing life, which also doubles as a macrocosm of my feelings...

Album Review: "Attack On Memory" by Cloud Nothings
8.5/10 [MUST-HAVE] Audio: “Stay Useless” Audio: “No Future, No Past” “There’s almost nothing on there that isn’t a first take kind of thing.” That’s what Dylan Baldi, Cloud Nothings’ creator and front man, said about recording Attack On Memory, as noted in Consequence of Sound’s interview with him. The Steve Albini-produced...

The Men: "Open Your Heart"
[MUST-HAVE] Last year, The Men, an art rock/noise rock collective from Brooklyn, released a tremendous LP in Leave Home. Featuring tracks like “If You Leave” and “Shittin’ With The Shah”, Leave Home excelled in reviving an appreciation of punk-driven melodies. The Men are back at it again with their forthcoming album, Open Your Heart. The title track was released...

Listen: "Saint Nothing" by Daniel Rossen
Daniel Rossen, guitarist/vocalist of Grizzly Bear, is set to release a solo EP entitled Silent Hour/Golden Mile. Out March 19, the baroque-pop genius’ new work serves as a means of “[…] Getting my legs back,” according to Rossen. The piano-driven track swirls in alluring and ornate instrumentation and a build-up that Grizzly Bear fans will find familiar. With poignant...

Destroyer covers New Order
Destroyer, creators of our fourth best LP of 2011, have recorded a cover of New Order’s “Leave Me Alone”. This cover is part of a compilation of covers that make up New Order’s classic Power, Corruption & Lies, as guided by the British zine Mojo. Though Destroyer makes no drastic attempt to change the song, Dan Bejar and company’s unique style is evident through...

Some flight delays and previous engagements prevented us from posting this until now, but we’re glad you’re still here.) 2011 was a superb year, and while we admit that they’re weren’t as many bona fide classics as say, I don’t know, 2009...

THE BEST ALBUMS OF 2011: 30-21
[Honorable Mentions] This year was an odd year for music to say the least. The rise of post-dubstep, indie-R&B (both terms are inherently trite), and youth-centered hip-hop acts paved the way for a new scene of artists to move through. But while many fresh faces occupy our Top 30 albums of the year, a number of veterans have also done their usual magic. This list was no walk in the park by...

THE BEST ALBUMS OF 2011: HONORABLE MENTIONS
[DEC. 14: 30-21 | DEC. 15: 20-11 | DEC. 16: 10-1] As is the case with most lists, there are bound to be certain things that don’t make the cut, but certainly deserve recognition. This year was especially hard given the wide-ranging sounds that made up 2011. But as a form of appreciation, we’ve compiled a list of ten albums that didn’t quite make the Top 30, but deserve...

THE TOP TEN SONGS OF 2011
10. THE WALL by YUCK Purveyors of slacker rock, Yuck made everyone feel nostalgic with “The Wall”, a track that’s undeniably infectious, and undeniably dewy-eyed. Chunky riffs and Daniel Blumberg’s lyricism (“It’s just the way that I feel/ Looking over”) help to make this cut an essential reflection of 90’s revitalization. -AR —— ...

Watch: Lana Del Rey's "Born To Die"
Check out the new single by the now-infamous Lana Del Rey. Entitled “Born To Die”, we can make obvious, albeit disenchanting, assumptions about this track… There’s also a clip meant to hint toward an in-the-process-of-being-made video, which essentially just entails Del Rey standing naked against a man for nearly five minutes (what?). Check out “Born To Die”...

RIP Altered Zones
I started this music blog around this time last year, and one of the greatest inspirations for it was Altered Zones, a music blog centered on the DIY attitude of musicians. Not only has AZ introduced the world to tremendous music, but their passion for music journalism in the burgeoning blog scene served as a model of motivation for many other blogs, including this one. So I’d personally...

CFCF remixes Fever Ray's 'Keep The Streets Empty...
In 2009, Fever Ray, the solo project of Karin Dreijer Andersson (one-half of The Knife), released its excellent self-titled debut. It’s a titillatingly haunting album that features dripping textures and Andersson’s unmistakably enigmatic vocals. Producer CFCF, better known for his role in the burgeoning ‘Night Bus’ scene, has gone back to 2009’s Fever Ray in an...

OTIOBR PRESENTS: THE HARD MAKE-OUT MIX
Thanksgiving season is obviously a very busy, family-oriented time. But as the weather gets colder, and as your stomach gets fuller, you’ll want to warm up. That’s why I’ve compiled this mix that’s STRICTLY for make-out sessions (well, not strictly, because it’s great regardless). If groping had a sound, it would be this hour-long mix (maybe, IDK, I’ve been...
