Chance The Rapper’s latest mixtape, Acid Rap, is a superb introduction to the Chicago MC’s loose, drugged, and sometimes wonderfully trite music. The usually soulful production of Acid Rap’s sound (“Good Ass Intro” and “Cocoa Butter Kisses,” for example) are a mainstay of Chicago sound, though, thanks to the contrasting ‘drill’ music of Lil Reese and Chief Keef, that might not be so evident anymore. On “NaNa,” the more blunted side of Chance The Rapper rears its head as he brings his cheeky boastfulness to the table over a funky, unruffled beat. Queens, NY native Action Bronson also brings his A-Game as he drops bumptious lines like, “Introducing, it’s Bronsolino/ With my hair slicked back, I look like Rick Pitino/ Three Japanese dykes in my El Camino.”

Though some unpleasant facets of Chance The Rapper still exist, in my opinion, Acid Rap shows this former Jones Prep student in a new alluring light.
